DREADMOOR Beginner Guide: Core Loop & First Trips
A fan-made Dreadmoor beginner guide: the sailing, fishing, scavenging, trading and crafting loop, night danger, and what to expect from the demo.
Last updated: September 25, 2026
DREADMOOR is a dark first-person fishing adventure developed by Dream Dock and published by Digital Vortex Entertainment (Steam App ID 3629430). You captain a fishing trawler through the flooded Submerged Lands — catching fish, scavenging ruins, trading with surviving settlements, upgrading your boat, and dealing with real-time danger on the water and on foot.
This guide covers the core loop as it is officially described today. The game is not released yet: the public Steam demo arrives October 6, 2026, and the full release is planned for Q4 2026. Treat every specific number in any guide as provisional until the demo is playable.
The core loop
DREADMOOR is built around a repeating survival loop. Each trip out on the water connects the same systems:
- Sail your trawler through dangerous waters and pick a destination.
- Fish — skill-based fishing is the heart of the game and your main source of resources.
- Scavenge ruined locations on land and abandoned spots at sea for materials.
- Trade your catches and salvage with surviving settlements.
- Craft and upgrade — turn resources into bait, equipment, and trawler improvements.
- Survive the trip home: mutated creatures, night danger, and ship wear are all real threats.
Fishing is not a side activity — it connects directly to survival and progression through bait, storage, inventory management, and the upgrades it funds. New players should expect fishing to be the first system they invest in.
What is confirmed about progression
Two skill trees are confirmed by official material: a Fishing Skill Tree and a Ship Upgrade Skill Tree. Confirmed ship-side upgrades include Hull Armour Mk I, engine variants, a fish storage upgrade, and a roof-mounted lantern. On the tool side, the demo news confirms a Grappling Hook Gun, a Harpoon Launcher, lockpicking, and radio tuning.
Exact skill effects, upgrade costs, and level requirements have not been published — anything you read about specific values (including on other sites) is unconfirmed until the demo ships.
⚠️ Pre-release guide — values will change
DREADMOOR is still unreleased. The September 2026 Open Playtest reworked quests, regions, fish, dialogue, tutorials, and the fishing system itself. Treat precise numbers, spawn points, and build advice from before the October 6, 2026 demo as historical, not current.
Day, night, and ship upkeep
DREADMOOR runs a day and night cycle, and night is openly framed as dangerous. The roof-mounted lantern exists to support night operation, and official demo material calls out night danger explicitly. Plan longer expeditions for daylight until you have upgrades to survive the dark.
Your trawler also needs care: ship maintenance is a confirmed system, and hull upgrades exist for a reason. Expect wear and damage to matter between trips — check your hull before pushing into new waters.
💡 Demo and full release are different dates
The Steam demo launches October 6, 2026. The full game is only announced for a Q4 2026 window. Do not treat October 6 as the release date — see our Demo & Release Info guide for the exact status.
What to do first (when the demo lands)
The demo is the first playable build for most players, so first steps are written with it in mind:
- Do the tutorial quests first — the official rework touched the tutorial and quest chain, so older playtest advice is outdated.
- Fish early and often — fishing funds bait, storage, and your first ship upgrades.
- Upgrade storage before range — more fish storage means every trip earns more before you risk the return voyage.
- Keep night trips short until you have the lantern or better hull armour.
- Radio and lockpicking open up exploration — official demo news confirms you can pick locked containers and use the ship's radio to uncover new destinations.
We will re-verify every step of this page against the demo build once it is live on October 6, 2026.
