Dreadmoor Game: Setting, Systems & Maker

What kind of game Dreadmoor is: a dark first-person fishing adventure by Dream Dock in the flooded Submerged Lands — fishing, crafting, boats, combat.

Last updated: September 25, 2026

Dreadmoor is an atmospheric first-person fishing adventure set in a flooded world, developed by Dream Dock and published by Digital Vortex Entertainment. It is coming to PC via Steam (App ID 3629430): a public demo arrives October 6, 2026, and the full release is planned for Q4 2026. The game passed 400,000 wishlists in early September 2026, which the developers announced alongside the most recent playtest.

If you have seen Dredge and wondered what a similar mood would feel like in first person — with your own hands on the rod, the fuel pump, and the workbench — that is close to the pitch. Hands-on previews throughout 2026 repeatedly landed on the same word: tactile.

The setting: the Submerged Lands

The game takes place in the Submerged Lands, a coastal world swallowed by water after what the Steam page calls "a catastrophic human mistake." Settlements survive on high ground, the water is dangerous, and something called the Sea Blight reshapes whatever it touches. The developers' lore diary describes the Sea Blight as a biological substance discovered before the collapse — once a breakthrough used in medicine and engineering, now a spreading corruption that often shows up as a faint green mist.

The developer FAQ describes the structure as a semi-open world: large, freely explorable locations connected by boat travel, with a full storyline and hand-crafted quests alongside free exploration — "think of it like Metro Exodus, but set on the sea." Safe zones exist where survivors trade, rest, and hand out quests.

The core loop

Each expedition chains the same systems together:

  1. Sail your trawler to fishing spots and salvage sites.
  2. Fish — the heart of the game (see the fishing guide).
  3. Scavenge ruins, caves, and shipwrecks for scrap and blueprints.
  4. Trade catches and salvage with settlements.
  5. Craft bait, harpoons, medicine, and tools (crafting).
  6. Upgrade and maintain your trawler (boat upgrades) — the Dev Diary calls the trawler "a tool and a lifeline," not just transport.
  7. Survive the trip — combat is real time, on sea and on land (weapons & combat).

One rule worth knowing early: most equipment is stored safely between expeditions, but your catch can be lost if your ship is destroyed — the developers' own FAQ makes fish the exception to safe storage.

How it plays

The FAQ describes fishing as first-person and skill-based, built around fish stamina and line tension with quick-time events at key moments. Crafting is essential rather than optional, day and night cycles plus weather affect exploration, and boss-level creatures hide in the depths — the most valuable catches in the game if you can bring them in.

Hands-on previews from GDC, PAX East, and Summer Game Fest 2026 add texture: previews describe physical interactions for nearly everything — pumping fuel by hand, tuning the radio dial by dial, dragging ingredients across a workbench — and a Monster Hunter-style progression where small fish become bait for bigger prey. These impressions come from preview builds, so details may have shifted since; the October 6 demo is the first build most players will touch.
